People with disabilities interested in technology careers now have access to specialized training and career development in Pensacola. Now recruiting new participants, abilIT is a no-cost program designed to help people with disabilities build technical skills, prepare for industry-recognized credentials and pursue meaningful careers in information technology and cybersecurity.
The program is offered locally by Global Connections to Employment (GCE) in partnership with Melwood, the nonprofit organization that developed abilIT and collaborates with partners across the country to expand access to technology training for people with disabilities.
This 14-week program combines technical training, professional development and employment support, helping participants gain in-demand technology skills, prepare for industry-recognized certifications and connect with employers who are hiring. Participants also receive employment services and follow-along support to help them succeed in the workplace.
“Too often, people with disabilities have the talent and potential to succeed in technology careers but lack access to specialized training and industry connections,” said Katrina Simpkins, GCE’s senior director of community employment services. “The abilIT program helps close that gap by giving participants the opportunity to prepare for industry-recognized credentials, connect with employers and build lifelong careers in technology.”
Participants will have the opportunity to prepare for certifications such as CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ and CompTIA Security+. The program also provides resume development, interview preparation, networking skills and personalized career support to help participants confidently transition from training to employment.
The abilIT program is open to people with disabilities, including veterans with service-connected disabilities, who:
- Have a high school diploma, GED or equivalent
- Are interested in technology careers
- Have foundational technology skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, or some prior IT experience
- Are seeking competitive integrated employment opportunities
