Professional growth journey: Nikki Thomas

Nikki Thomas helps individuals with disabilities prepare for and secure meaningful employment opportunities. She serves as a pre-employment services coordinator for Global Connections to Employment (GCE), one of the nation’s largest private employers of people with disabilities. Nikki began her journey with GCE in 2007.

In 2012, after several years of dedicated service, Nikki stepped away to explore other opportunities. However, her passion for her work with GCE never dissipated. During her time away, she found herself thinking often about the individuals she had supported and the work she felt so driven to do.

“I really missed doing what I was called to do—working with people with disabilities,” she said. “I feel that this is my calling because everything that I’ve learned in life, I’m able to share it with somebody else to help them along the way.”

After missing the work she loved, Nikki followed her calling and returned to GCE in 2016. Today, she has served the organization for more than 14 combined years, continuing to guide people with disabilities as they explore and obtain employment opportunities that align with their skills and goals.

“Nikki always pitches in when there is a need. She is kind and positive with her co-workers and follows our mission of helping others,” Candy Crossman, Nikki’s coworker, said. “I’ve worked with Nikki for a number of years, and she is someone I can consistently count on for support. She is compassionate with her clients and her team members.”

Nikki’s people‑first approach shines in every interaction, allowing her to build strong, genuine connections with those she supports. Whether she’s working with someone she placed in a job ten years ago or someone completely new to GCE, Nikki loves meeting and helping everyone.

“My favorite thing that I get to do is talk to different people. I really enjoy being able to connect with individuals, see a smile on their faces, and help them find jobs and careers that they probably thought they would never have the opportunity to do,” she said.

Her passion for people motivates every part of her work. She takes pride in seeing others succeed and approaches every person like they are a member of her team.

“I don’t see my clients as clients. I see them as teammates. We’re all on the same team, and I have to be that teammate where I’m giving 100% of my time to them so they are successful,” she explained.
