Professional growth journey: Whitney Jordan

This image features a photo of Whitney Jordan and provides a quote from her that reads: "GCE is a wonderful place to work and grow. They help people with challenges find their place in the world of work - people like me! I plan to keep working at GCE until I retire!"

Whitney Jordan is a custodian at NAS Pensacola with Global Connections to Employment (GCE), one of the nation’s largest private employers of people with disabilities. Whitney began her journey with GCE in December 2014 and is about to celebrate her 11th year with the company.

Before she began at GCE, Whitney worked with a job coach to explore different types of jobs. She briefly volunteered at a senior center and discovered that she enjoyed doing custodial work.

“When I got the opportunity to apply for a custodial position with GCE, I was thrilled—and even happier when I was offered the job,” Whitney said. “Working for GCE has been a huge blessing in my life.”

Over the years, Whitney has grown personally and professionally, developing strong communication skills and learning the value of teamwork. She credits GCE for helping her build confidence and independence.

“Working for GCE has helped me realize that I have more abilities than disabilities,” Whitney said. “In the beginning, I sometimes faced situations that were frustrating or stressful, but my supervisors and job coach supported me with helpful accommodations.”

Those accommodations included short walks, avoiding negative conversations and listening to music to stay calm and focused. With time and support, Whitney learned an important lesson: “I can only control myself. I choose to stay positive and focus on the job I love.”

Changes and confrontation can make Whitney anxious, but thanks to the help and support of her supervisors, she has learned how to best manage these anxieties.

Whitney’s time working with GCE has also helped her find the type of workflow that works best for her. She says that developing and following a daily routine helps her stay confident and productive.

She has enjoyed learning how to be productive and responsible. Her strong work ethic and dedication have opened new opportunities for her within GCE.

“After proving myself as dependable and hardworking, I was given the opportunity to work independently in a building of my own. This has been the perfect job for me, and I love the responsibility.”

In addition to personal responsibility, GCE has allowed Whitney to become financially responsible and independent. She enjoys being able to pay her own bills, take care of her needs and use her money to do things that she loves, such as skating and going to the movies. Whitney even hit a major financial milestone early in her career.

“In my first three years, I saved enough to pay cash for my first car — a 2010 green Kia Soul. That was such a proud moment for me!” she said.

Reflecting on her journey, Whitney is proud of how far she has come. With so many personal and professional successes over the past decade, she is an exceptional team member. Whitney continues to use her talents to shine and looks forward to the many years ahead with GCE.

“GCE is a wonderful place to work and grow. They help people with challenges find their place in the world of work—people like me!” Whitney said. “I plan to keep working at GCE until I retire!”
