Liberty Hoekstra, supervisor, has been named Global Connections to Employment (GCE) Team Member of the Year. Liberty joined GCE driven by a deeply personal connection to the mission. Having an older child with autism, she understands the challenges neurodiverse individuals face in finding supportive workplaces.

Since joining GCE in 2022, Liberty has embraced her role as a supervisor at Eielson Air Force Base Food Services with dedication. She oversees shift leaders, ensures smooth operations and steps in wherever needed. Whether serving, cashiering or lending a hand on the floor, she exemplifies what it means to lead by example.

“The people I work with are the best part of my job,” Liberty said. “I love watching them thrive, be themselves and make friends without fear of judgment.”

This genuine care extends to her interactions with the base community, building connections and recognizing the unique stories behind every individual. “I make it a point to know their first names. Many of them have spent years being identified only by their last names in the military.”

The organization’s mission and values resonate deeply with Liberty. This attitude shapes her approach, ensuring that her team feels valued and supported.

Liberty’s dedication goes beyond daily tasks. She is known for her thoughtful gestures and was nominated for GCE Team Member of the Year based on her outstanding support of coworkers, including helping one through a medical emergency. “Everyone wants to be recognized, even for the smallest things.” To that end, she creates small tokens of appreciation, like keychains and inspirational cards. “Some might find it cheesy, but for our employees, it’s transformative. Many of them haven’t received recognition before, and these small gestures bring the biggest smiles.”

Over the past year, Liberty has made a significant impact by building strong, meaningful connections with team members. “I’ve been able to connect with everyone in ways others might not. Understanding them on their level and helping them navigate challenges has been incredibly rewarding.” Her empathy and leadership ensure that employees feel seen, supported and empowered to succeed.

Liberty’s story shows why she was chosen as GCE’s Team Member of the Year.
